Recommended books to start being acquainted with the NLP

The structure of magic I

(Richard Bandler and John Grinder, 1975)
First publication where they show the world what later would be called NLP. In this book, the authors give the rules for the verbal communication, equivalents to grammar in linguistics or mathematical formulas. This group of rules is named as “Meta-Model”, which is a synthesis of the observation and modeling of the work of “geniuses therapists”, like Milton H. Erickson, the most important hypnotherapist in the world, Frits Perls, the founder of the Gestalt therapy, and Virginia Satir, one of the most influential authorities of the family therapy. In this book, the Meta-Model is presented in a total context of psychotherapy, with detailed material of transformational grammar.

Continuation of Volume I. In this book the authors present us their conclusions about communication and nonverbal language, synesthesia, representational systems and incongruence, in a context of family therapy.

Frogs into princes

(Richard Bandler and John Grinder, 1979)
An excellent transcript from a seminar of NLP imparted by its creators, in which they explain in a simple, fresh and nice way, the methods that will help you eliminate negative habits, replacing them with your own resources that have been accumulated by positive experiences throughout your life. The book is full of stories and anecdotes that are informative and fun. With the instructions that Bandler and Grinder give here, you can eliminate phobias, traumas, generating new and better behaviors, making you mentally free of the obstacles that stop you from having a fulfilling life.

Using your brain: For a change

(Richard Bandler, 1988)
A compilation of seminars imparted by Richard Bandler about sub modalities. He explains in an explicit way the model “Chas!” in his visual and hearing models. The main idea is based on the sub modalities of the representational systems that determine the subjective quality or emotional impact of a thought or memory that affect our state of mind.

Heart of the mind

(Connirae Andreas and Steve Andreas, 1990)
An amazing collection of strategies that can be applied to a broad range of situations in daily life: Public speaking, spelling, relate effectively with others, trauma fixing, dealing with death, goal setting, and many others. It contains excellent applications to eliminate allergies, a model to increase or empower the processes of body recovery from illnesses, and a chapter about time lines. Everything is exposed in a clear and simple way, but above all, in an ecological form.

Introducing Neuro-Linguistic Programming

(Joseph O´Connor and John Seymour, 1990)
An excellent way to start knowing or using the NLP in a structured and rational way, completely different to the “savage” ways of the creators of the NLP (of course, both styles have their advantages and virtues) It explains in a clear way every principal model of the NLP. It contains a very useful section where a lot of NLP books are described, a glossary of terms of the field, and a guide to select trainings in NLP. John Grinder writes the preface and Robert Dilts writes the prologue. Very useful for understanding the first books published about NLP.
